So who is the recommended provider and why?

We often find out during year two that our initial search for what’s the best place register or renew a domain didn’t yield great results. Unfortunately, this happens to many unsuspecting consumers or entrepreneurs when buying a domain and/or website services from some well-known providers. This is understandable as enticing deals for free domains and flashy sites are flaunted by domain registrars or other online companies

offering web services. What usually happens is, a customer will opt-in for the offer and get started building their perfect site with loads of awesome content!

After a year of raising and nurturing our web baby, you find out the price to renew is 10x more than expected for another year! In addition, you are now made aware that there are additional charges to renew an SSL certificate and domain privacy so your real name, address, email, and phone number aren’t broadcasted to the whole world. Sometimes this might even be the first time you heard of either and, we didn’t even get to the website or hosting yet – yikes! The big hit to the wallet is disappointing to say the least but Sometimes, no matter the cost, we stay. Like some in bad relationships, we stay because “it’s just easier” and maybe things will get better. They won’t.

Not Just Higher Costs but Self-Imposed Switching Costs

It’s a basic economic principle and is one that is used to the fullest extent in this industry – there are a lot of competitors, low barriers to entry, and some companies bundle creative packages for niche markets while other pull levers such as systematically creating a situation where the buyer is now in a position in that the switching costs are extremely high. This occurs because of all the time invested in building your site over the year. This situation causes us to perceive the switching costs as being higher than just breaking it off. Sometimes this can be true when platforms don’t allow you to download your products, content, images, and even your domain name! Before signing up for a free domain and template website, be sure to find out how you export your mailing list, products, and content. As well as the annual renewal costs for everything included in the package. This can be found on their website after a little digging.

What are the Turn-key Solutions Options

To see what the going rate was these days for template type services are, we checked out Squarespace. First thing we found after several scrolls further down the page was this: “We’ve traditionally offered one free domain with the purchase of an annual Squarespace plan, and now anyone with a paid Squarespace site can register domains for $20 to $70 per year each.” This did include the SSL but we found that many users complained that their auto-SSL caused errors in Google Chrome like below.

Another big drawback regarding Squarespace is that you cannot use a premium domain. This is unfortunate and limits the ability to find that perfect domain.

We found that not just Squarespace was charging high prices for TLD’s but many other providers too

Choosing a domain name

When you’re choosing a new domain name, think about your purpose and objectives for your site. How would people search for your product, service, or content? What search terms would they use or keywords when they are typing in a search engine (or browser these days). Ideally, you would want that to match your site’s purpose or brand. However, think about the biggest brands in the world, what do they have in common? Short, easy to pronounce, easy to remember. This is not an all-encompassing rule as there are lots of examples of the opposite. However, I recommend memorable and short as the first priority and preferably with a standard TLD like .com, .net, .co, .org, or even a glamour TLD sometimes works like solutions.guru or bestbread.us but use with caution. Check out the FAQ below for a power tip guaranteed to improve ranking, cash flow, and build your personal brand.

What if I already have a domain?

If you own a domain name purchased through a provider (like GoDaddy or Namecheap), it’s not too complicated update your DNS to point to a new or existing website. Another option is to transfer your domain away from the registrar to your new services provider. Keep in mind, it requires a 60 day waiting period after initial purchase transfers your domain to a new registrar.

Limitations when Registering

  • You can’t register a domain name that’s already registered by someone else.
  • Some country TLDs are restricted
  • You can’t register premium domains with some providers like.

Picking a Domain – The basics

  • Most Domains can have between 3 and 63 characters. Keep in mind that shorter domain names are easier to remember.
  • Some domain names will violate intellectual property rights if they include words such as amazon or godaddy. This is something you want to stay far away from.
  • Domains can only have letters, numbers, and hyphens. You can’t add symbols like $ and *. Most Domains with special characters (such as ü, é, or ñ) should be avoided as they will not function properly on all browsers. If a browser can’t display the character, it will reformat the domain with extra characters and dashes. For example, the domain “übercool.de,” redirects to “xn--bercool-m2a.de” in unsupported browsers.
  • Domains may be subject to state and local sales taxes. If your domain is subject to tax, you’ll see it added at checkout.

So who is the recommended provider and why?

Personally, I found Godaddy to have consistent piecing, phenomenal renewal rates, and if you purchase through their partners, like us, you receive a discount and a Free SSL. Namecheap, Name Hero, and a few others are very good as well but I prefer the Godaddy interface and smart suggestions their tool provides. We can help you carefully select the right domain
